I am still not entirely sure they are not kidding with this. Apparently for a mere $39.95 (plus tax and shipment) you can get a framed certificate which marks the publication of your article in one of the academic journals published by Elsevier.

Oh dear. I had really thought that this was a parody. But it’s absolutely real. I suppose the target audience for this is the people who take up Who’s Who on the offer for inclusion (“if you buy the handsome leather bound volume”).

I have to admit…the book sounds intriguing. But $50 for a hardbound with 48 pages and you have to buy at least 5 of them? well that’s the Elsevier we all know and love. It would all depend on what you had to pay for the 400 page maximum sized book, no?

I actually rather like this idea – well, not the certificate, but the posters. That seems like a not all that absurd way to mark a big deal publication (like say a grad student’s first).

Actually, yes, the book could be kind of cool — and given that you are allowed to upload your own PDFs, you could thumb your nose at Elsevier by including Open Access publications.
But if you are seriously interested, there are companies such as Lulu.com that will do a similar thing for less (and without a minimum copy number). In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Elsevier actually sends your order to Lulu or a similar service.

Yeah, and I believe Kinko’s will bind anything you bring to them as well. For a small smidgeon of what Elsevier charges, I bet….
