BSD moves to emulate

April 3, 2016

Bryan Roth, of Salvanorin A and DREADD fame, was honored by ASPET with the Goodman and Gilman award at EB. In his award lecture he gave a great summary of his work to date, which is all very cool.

But one thing he did was to emphasize how a master’s degreed tech in his lab made one of the major discoveries,  that she refused to take first author and that is the only reason she wasn’t listed first.

That is the kind of thing people who are in the Coalition of the Decent do.

Good to find scientific hero types remembering to credit where due.

What was the reasoning behind refusing the credit on the paper?

    He didn’t say.

I worked with a tech who made a significant observation, the topic of a whole paper, and who refused (co)first authorship because he didn’t feel like he could take responsibility for the paper as a first author should. That’s a legitimate reason to decline but I wonder if I should have pushed him more to feel comfortable as first author.

SMH… Only those who aspire to or who have acquired terminal degrees (PhD, maybe MD if they can get over their god complexes) can really consider themselves scientists. Anyone with a lesser degree is merely a glorified dishwasher. Sounds like these tech understand their place in this vertically ascending world.

Under no circumstances should someone with only a masters be allowed to be first author on a paper unless they’re enrolled in a PhD program.

Dudes, you have to sneak up on those trolls a little more gradually. Stomping around like that scares off the fishies.

I need to spend more time at your knee, master.

  8. drugmonkey Says:

    No, that is creepy.

    Bryan is a solid dude.
