STAY TUNED: CSR / NIH is reconsidering their options for study sections
October 22, 2013
Elevating a comment from Chris:
IMPORTANT UPDATE: My study section (originally scheduled for Oct 1-2, then cancelled until Feb) is now back on! I just heard from our chair that we will be holding an online meeting in the next few days (thanks for the advance notice). According to our chair, the “significant pressure” put on the NIH from the extramural community has led them to reconsider their decision to cancel everything and bring things back online. I have no authority on this, but would assume that this will happen across the board. So take heart, all may not be lost for this round…
I am likewise hearing rumor that the CSR is reconsidering what they are going to do.
Stay tuned folks, this ride ain’t over yet.
Updated: ps, your comments at Rock Talk can’t help but be viewed as part of the “significant pressure”. Go to it.
Update 2:

What are you confused about? Stuff will be reviewed now, but funding decision will still be delayed, so similar to other years when they don’t have a budget. Giant council in May, similar to previous years, but no doubled-up study sections.

My understanding is that the January council meeting is now back on again, as well. So study sections will not be doubled up, nor will the council. Review will be a little ad hoc this time around, but I, for one, am glad to be able to finish the reviews we started this fall. It was a disservice to everyone to put them off.

Evidence is popping up all over. Looks like they are going to try to get the missed study sections completed in time to put the grants through the Jan 2014 Council rounds.

I will not rejoice until I hear from my SRO, PO (fat chance), or people on my study section. I’ve already taken steps toward getting “refreshing” data…not pulling out on that just yet.

So the option to submit a “refreshal” is gone? I’d warmed up to the idea, we do have some shiny new data.

From my PO today:
“However, it may not be necessary to reschedule all applications. We are waiting for clarification of the possibilities by the Office of Extramural Research. An update should be available within the next few days.”

Woo Hoo! My study section is back on. We should raise our voices as a somewhat united community more often.

My study section has also been re-scheduled. It will be a nightmare to change my agenda but for the first time in my life I expect to leave the room with a good feeling.

From my PO:
“…there should be a new Guide Notice either today or tomorrow, and it will shed more light on the issue of missed study sections.”

They will try to reschedule as many study sections in time for January council as possible…
