Twelve Months of DrugMonkey (2011)
December 20, 2011
The rules for this blog meme are quite simple.
-Post the link and first sentence from the first blog entry for each month of the past year.
I originally did this meme, after seeing similar posted by Janet Stemwedel and John Lynch. Prior editions include 2010, 2009 and 2008.
Jan: A comment from williams on a prior post intrigues me. S/he asserts: My opinion is that reviewers should assess the scientific merit of a grant in itself (impact/significance/ PI’s scientific potential).
Feb: I’ve been reading a little chatter from a few newish looking PI types today on the perennial topic of lab size.
Mar: Jennifer Rohn has a nice bit up at the Nature News entitled “Give postdocs a career, not empty promises” which overviews an issue of scientific careerism that is dear to my heart.
Apr: December is one thing. It has to be expected value at this point that we in the NIH funded extramural research community are going to have to weather some weirdness for the December 1 funding date.
May: Some idjit Twitted: The fact that you cannot grapple with complexity of feelings and ethics does not make you intelligent or superior…it makes you a teenager
Jun: Some Open Science wackaloon has posted a grant application that he plans to submit here
Jul: A news bit by J. Mervis in Science reports a case in which a professor is suing her institution for reneging on financial commitments made during her recruitment.
Aug: A comment about the editorial board makeup for the new open-access journal from Cell has me wondering.
Sep: The paradox of the poles of the work-life balance discussion in Nature News is this. Nobody who succeeds at work and then claims balance really knows if they just got very, very lucky in their career.
Oct: I will never, ever understand you people who “add the citations later”.
Nov: As those of us in the neurosciences prepare for our largest annual scientific gathering, we should attend to a certain little task to assist with the odds of obtaining NIH grant funding.
Dec: HR 1254 (pdf) has passed the House.
If you join in (and you should) drop a link in the comments so we can see your year in review, eh?
